Parking in Italy: blue, white and yellow lines explained

In Italy, read bay colour together with the sign: paid, free and reserved spaces can all have conditions. Check hours, eligible vehicles and any parking-disc requirement before leaving the car. Paying for a space does not authorise entry through a ZTL gate.

How we work

Key points

  • Blue means paid, white free and yellow reserved parking: always read the signs too.
  • Free parking can have a maximum duration and require a parking disc.
  • Paying does not authorise a reserved space or entry into a ZTL.

Florence car parks: available spaces and height limits

Check reported free spaces and available height information for 13 Florence car parks. The tariff comparison covers Parterre and Beccaria only. A reported space is not a reservation or permission to enter the ZTL.

Italian parking colours at a glance

Illustrative diagrams, not photographs of a specific street. Read the signs and the detailed exceptions below.

Blue bays

Usually paid parking. Check operating hours, payment instructions and any reservation.

White bays

Usually free parking. A time limit or parking disc may still apply.

Yellow bays

Reserved parking. Check who may use the space; paying does not remove the reservation.

Read the space, then the sign, then the payment instructions

Check the markings, then the sign for that stretch of road, then the payment instructions. This guide explains how those conditions combine for ordinary visitors. Prices and paid hours are local: use the sign at the actual space before leaving the car.

What blue, white and yellow markings mean

ACI’s guidance for visitors distinguishes the main colours. Read the following table together with the signs on site.

MarkingStarting pointWhat still needs checking
BluePaid parkingApplicable hours, rate, maximum stay and payment method
WhiteFree parkingTime limit, parking disc and any stated conditions
YellowReserved parkingWho may use the space and what authorisation is required

A free space can be unsuitable for a long visit if its permitted duration is short. A paid space can be unsuitable if the sign reserves it for another category during part of the day. A yellow space is not a more convenient version of a blue one. Treat a change in markings or a new sign as a reason to start your checks again rather than extending the previous street’s rules by assumption.

Read a parking sign as a set of separate questions

Find the sign relevant to your actual bay, not merely the first meter you can see. Check whether arrows or the arrangement of bays indicate where the rule begins or ends. Look for a vehicle category, a permit requirement, a time interval and a maximum duration. If several panels apply, read them together rather than selecting the one that seems most favourable.

Then connect the sign to your planned visit. Write down when you intend to return and ask whether a different condition starts before then. Arriving while parking is free does not settle the rules for the whole period you want to stay. Likewise, paying for the current period does not answer what happens if the space later becomes reserved or unavailable.

If the sign is damaged, hidden or genuinely ambiguous, do not use a guess as the basis for an all-day visit. Look for official information about that street, ask the local parking service, or choose a clearer location. A photograph can help you explain what you saw, but it is not permission to disregard a condition you cannot interpret.

Blue spaces: make the payment match the car and location

At the meter or in the authorised payment service, check the registration, zone and end time before confirming. A saved number plate can belong to a car you used on an earlier trip. A suggested location in an app can belong to the next street. Match the details with the signs and the actual vehicle instead of relying entirely on the phone’s location estimate.

Keep the confirmation or ticket. Follow the instructions about displaying a paper ticket if one is issued; do not assume that every city checks payments in the same way. If the system uses number plate recognition, the plate you entered matters. If an app offers extra time, check the parking limit before extending: the ability to purchase more time is not evidence that staying longer is permitted.

Decide who in your group is responsible for the payment and reminder. When several people are unloading bags, it is easy for each to assume somebody else has started the session. Before leaving, confirm together that payment is complete and identify the return time. A pending payment screen is not the same thing as an active parking session.

White spaces: free does not necessarily mean all day

A white bay can still have a duration limit and a requirement to display a parking disc. Look for the time information before deciding that you can leave the car until the evening. Where a disc is required, set and display the arrival time as instructed and make sure it can be read from outside the vehicle.

With a rental car, check for a disc before leaving the rental location rather than discovering at your destination that you have none. If a disc is missing, ask how to obtain one or choose parking with a payment arrangement you can satisfy. Do not invent a local rule allowing a handwritten note merely because it would be convenient.

Plan your visit around the posted limit. Returning to adjust a disc without actually ending the parking stay is not a sensible strategy for a longer visit. If you need more time for a museum, a meal or an appointment, compare a car park or another bay whose conditions fit the whole visit from the outset.

Yellow spaces: check the beneficiary, not just the symbol

Reserved spaces serve particular authorised users. Before using one, identify the category shown on the sign and whether the reservation is general or tied to a particular authorisation. Do not infer eligibility from an empty space, a short intended stop or the fact that another car is already parked there.

A visitor staying with a resident should ask how any visitor arrangement actually works. A host’s own permit does not automatically become a visitor permit, and a hotel reservation does not by itself establish a parking entitlement on the street. Get the exact location and procedure from the person or organisation responsible, including whether your vehicle must be registered before arrival.

For disability-related parking, separate the validity of the badge, the entitlement to use a particular bay and any registration needed for access. Our guide to parking with a disability badge includes the Italian rules and the CUDE platform. Do not transfer a rule from another country or from a private car park to a marked street space without checking.

Rome: use current payment channels, not old travel advice

ATAC’s payment guidance lists meter, mobile and participating retailer options. It also documents the withdrawal of sales of prepaid paper parking vouchers. That matters if an old guide tells you simply to buy a scratch card at a tobacconist: check the current service rather than assuming that every shop still sells the same product.

At a retailer that activates parking, give the correct registration, zone and intended duration, and check the record supplied. At a meter, read its actual payment instructions. On a phone, make sure the service covers the location. Choose a method you can complete and verify, not merely the first familiar brand name that appears in a search result.

ZTL access and parking are separate decisions

Before navigating to a central parking space, check the approach for a zona a traffico limitato. A blue bay inside a restricted area does not show that your vehicle may pass the access control. A garage booking likewise needs its own access instructions; do not assume that the reservation handles every restriction automatically.

Read our Italy ZTL guide before driving into a historic centre. If a hotel or garage offers to register your vehicle, obtain the precise procedure and the route they expect you to use. Keep the confirmation with the booking. If the permitted route is unclear, stop somewhere lawful outside the uncertain area and clarify before entering.

When payment fails or a notice arrives

If a meter fails, note the location and look for the official support instructions and other authorised payment methods. Do not interpret a failed card transaction as free parking. If you cannot establish a valid way to stay, choose another space. Avoid repeated unverified payments that leave you unsure whether anything succeeded; check the status and keep the receipts.

If you find a notice, read who issued it, the vehicle details, the stated reason and the payment or challenge instructions. Preserve relevant tickets, app confirmations and photographs. With a rental vehicle, distinguish a rental company’s administration charge from the authority’s parking notice. Do not assume that paying one settles the other, or that sending a message automatically pauses a deadline.

Rome: a practical choice between meter, shop and phone

ATAC lists ordinary rates of €1.00 per hour outside ZTLs and €1.20 inside, plus a €0.20 option for 15 minutes. These are starting points for reading the meter, not proof that access to the street is authorised.

For a quick errand, read the end time offered before buying: a short-stay product is useful only if unloading, walking and the errand fit inside it. For an uncertain appointment, compare a mobile session you can manage with a car park that permits the whole stay. Do not choose a short maximum stay just because the payment app is convenient.

If your phone has no connection, ATAC also lists PuntoLis retailers, where the operator needs the registration, zone and duration. Write those details down before entering the shop and check the resulting confirmation. Old paper vouchers are a separate issue: sales ended on 30 June 2026, while previously bought vouchers remain usable until 31 December 2026. Do not buy leftover paper stock from an unofficial seller for a later trip.

Before you walk away

Confirm the bay colour, the applicable sign, your eligibility, the allowed duration and the payment status. Look again for temporary restrictions that would affect the time you intend to return. Save the street name and parking location so another member of your group can find the vehicle if plans change.

Finally, set a reminder that leaves time to walk back. The point is to choose parking that fits your visit, not to spend the afternoon monitoring a space that never suited it. If the arrangement is too uncertain, a clearly signed car park with conditions you understand can be the more useful choice even when its headline price is higher.

Rome: give a retailer the zone, not just the street name

For a PuntoLis activation, ATAC requires the plate, zone and duration. Photograph the meter’s zone identification before walking to the shop. A long street can cross charging boundaries; the retailer cannot infer your bay from a hotel address. Check the activation record before leaving the counter.

Read the whole parking sign

These invented teaching signs combine a bay with a time or eligibility condition. They are not copies of signs at a real address. Colour is only the first clue; the panel can change who may use the space.

Blue bay + payment period

P
P · 08:00 → 20:00 · €

In this scenario, arriving at 17:30 means checking payment until 20:00. Do not infer overnight permission from the end of the paid period.

Here, free of charge does not mean unlimited duration. Set the arrival time and respect the posted two-hour limit.

An empty reserved space is not a spare visitor bay. Read the beneficiary and any permit number before considering it.

Rome: match the bay to the payment record

A fictional receipt below is deliberately incomplete. Compare each line with the street sign and the payment service before relying on it. Keep personal information out of public screenshots.

Plate: EXAMPLE

A correct payment amount does not fix a mistyped plate. Check the vehicle selected in the app, especially after hiring a car.

Zone: to verify

Match the zone identifier to the space, not merely the street name. A street may cross a tariff boundary.

Start / end / status

A saved card is not an active session. Verify confirmation and the covered time; retain the transaction reference if reporting an error.

Compare parking and onward travel costs

Copy the total quoted price for your full stay from each operator. Add the return transport cost for everyone travelling and any mandatory booking or payment fees. Use the same currency for both options.

Total = parking for the full stay + return transport for the group + mandatory fees. For example, a parking quote of 18 plus transport of 8 and fees of 2 totals 28, in your chosen currency.

This adds your own quotes; it does not fetch live prices or calculate hourly tariffs. Enter zero only when a cost is confirmed as free or does not apply. Compare cancellation terms, opening hours, vehicle height limits and the last return service separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can I park all day in a white bay?
Not necessarily. Check the maximum stay, any parking disc requirement and other signposted conditions before planning a long visit.
Can I use a yellow space if I pay?
Payment does not replace the authorisation needed for a reserved space. Check the permitted category and any specific permit requirement.
May I stay longer if the app offers an extension?
Check the permitted maximum stay first. The technical ability to buy time is not evidence that a longer stay is allowed.
Does a garage booking allow me to drive through a ZTL?
Do not assume so. Ask the garage for the permitted route, any registration procedure and confirmation before entering.
