Spanish number plate year estimator

Estimate the allocation year of a standard Spanish plate series. The result is a year or range, not the vehicle’s construction year or an exact registration date.

Input values

Values are processed in your browser, without sending them to a calculation service or saving them. Reloading clears the form.

Scope and limits

The source table is independent, not an official DGT register extract. A plate allocation year is not necessarily the construction year or first registration abroad. Imported and re-registered vehicles can be older. For an exact date consult the registration document or DGT report. Unsupported or newer series return no estimate.

How to use the result

Use the estimate to frame questions about a used car. Check the letter interval in the table below, then compare it with the vehicle documents; a difference may reflect importation or re-registration.

Method and assumptions

The three letters are compared with observed year-end checkpoints from Seis en Línea. A series on a year boundary returns both possible years because the table does not identify its final number. The final checkpoint is September 2026.

Audit trail behind the plate estimate

Use this source trail to distinguish the annual checkpoints from the partial 2026 cutoff.

Evidence layerWhat it can establish
2000 to 2025Annual checkpoints transcribed from Seis en Línea. Boundary letters may straddle two years; the numerical part cannot resolve this in our dataset.
2026-09-30 · NTBPartial cutoff, not a year-end checkpoint. NTB itself and later series are outside the estimate; there is no extrapolation to today.
DGTFor an official date, request a vehicle report. The reduced report concerns first registration in Spain, which can differ from first registration abroad.

One car can legitimately have four different dates

Fictional imported car: built in 2016, first registered abroad in 2017, registered in Spain in 2021, bought by you in 2026. These dates answer different questions. A Spanish plate series cannot prove manufacture year, ownership history or mileage.

Date in the fictional fileDocument to compare
2016Manufacturer’s construction evidence; do not derive this from the plate.
2017Original foreign registration record and import documents.
2021DGT date of first registration in Spain; compare the full report if buying used.
2026Sale and transfer documents. A change of keeper does not make the car newly built.
