Amsterdam: good to know before you park
Milieuzone
The milieuzone for passenger cars covers the whole area inside the A10 ring road. Diesel cars of emission class 4 or lower may not enter, even with a particulate filter, and neither may diesel hybrids of that class. Diesel cars of class 5 or higher and cars running on petrol, LPG or CNG are allowed. Diesel cars that are 40 years old or more are exempt without having to apply.
On-street parking
The city is split into zones, each with its own rate and paid hours. According to the gemeente, an hour costs €5.37 to €8.05 in Centrum, €3.01 to €6.98 in West and Zuid, €1.72 in Zuidoost and €1.29 in Weesp. At the parking machine you enter your number plate: no ticket is printed and enforcement is done by a scan car. Payment is by debit card, credit card or mobile phone only; foreign plates work and instructions are also given in English. An hourly ticket is set in steps of 5 minutes and a day ticket runs until 19:00 or 21:00. The city warns against scanning QR codes stuck on parking machines.
P+R
At P+R Zeeburg II, for instance, you pay €6 per 24 hours when entering from 10:00; entering before 10:00 costs €13 for the first 24 hours. The next 3 days cost €6 per 24 hours, and after 4 days the standard rate applies. The discount requires travelling back to the car by public transport, with your last check-in in the centre and your own OV-chipkaart or a paper GVB ticket. There is no discount with OVpay (bank card, phone or the new OV-pas), a barcode ticket or a paper NS ticket. Parking must be paid within one hour of your last check-out.
