How to read this list

Cities are grouped by country and then by region: autonomous community in Spain, province in the Netherlands, nation in the United Kingdom, region in Italy and state in the United States. Within each region they appear in alphabetical order. The figure in brackets is the number of car parks we list in that city, not the total that exists. Each city name is written in the language of its country, such as Sevilla or Den Haag, the same name you will see on road signs. The home page shows only the main cities of each country and those with the most car parks; this page lists them all.

Spain

The backbone is open data from the Ayuntamiento de Madrid, the Ajuntament de Barcelona, the Ajuntament de València, the Ayuntamiento de Pamplona and the Basque Government (Open Data Euskadi). Airports come from Aena’s pages, municipal car parks in Palma from SMAP’s price lists, and some hospitals and venues from their operator’s website. OpenStreetMap fills in what no public body publishes. The map on each car park page is the IGN España base map.

Netherlands, United Kingdom, Italy and United States

In the Netherlands, the main source is the National Parking Register (NPR) published by the RDW, with addresses and maps from PDOK (Kadaster), plus OpenStreetMap. In the United Kingdom, Bristol and Nottingham publish their car parks as open data; for other cities the base is OpenStreetMap, supplemented in some cases by council pages. In Italy, OpenStreetMap is combined with the South Tyrol Open Data Hub, open data from Roma Capitale and the Comune di Milano, and the websites of airports and municipal companies. Around New York, each car park has been checked on the website of its operator or of a public body, such as NYC DOT, the Port Authority or NJ TRANSIT.

What “no data” means

“No price data” means the source does not say whether the car park is free or paid. We do not infer it from a nearby car park or from the neighbourhood. The same goes for spaces, maximum height or prices: if nobody publishes them, the field stays empty rather than showing an estimate.

Check date and errors

Each car park page gives its source, with the reference of the original record (for example the OpenStreetMap identifier), and the date the data was retrieved. If you spot a mistake, the “Report an error on this car park” link on each page opens your email with a message already drafted; we check every report against the official source before correcting anything.
