Parking at the station: good to know

Why leave the car at the station

Parking by the station and carrying on by train makes sense when you are heading for a city centre with a low emission zone, expensive regulated parking or rush hour jams. It is also the simplest way to meet someone arriving by train, or to go away for a few days without relying on an early morning taxi. Car parks at major stations are built for this: access at any hour, spaces for disabled drivers and, more and more often, charging points.

What changes from one country to the next

In Spain, the car parks at big high speed stations are run by a private operator, and free parking is found mostly at commuter rail stations, tied to using public transport. In the Netherlands, most NS P+R sites cost nothing and the paid ones have a daily cap for anyone travelling by train that day, provided they do not pay with a bank card. In Italy, FS Park, part of the rail group, publishes rates for each station and lets you book a space together with your train ticket.

Three checks before you park

Look at the height limit if you carry a roof box or drive a van: it varies a lot from station to station. Check whether the traveller benefit requires a specific ticket, card or loyalty scheme. And work out the full cost of your stay, because a reasonable hourly rate gets expensive over a trip of several days if the car park has no daily cap. The country pages below list the stations, the operators and the figures checked on their official websites.
