Utrecht: good to know before you park

Milieuzone

Utrecht's milieuzone covers the city centre. Diesel passenger cars need at least emission class 5; cars on other fuels may enter, as may classic cars aged 40 years or more. The council's number plate check does not work for foreign plates, so drivers must check the emission class themselves. The extension to the whole built-up area planned for 1 January 2027 will not go ahead on that date.

Street parking

There are 3 paid parking zones. Zone A1: Monday to Saturday from 7:00 to 1:00 and Sunday from 12:00 to 18:00, at €8.01 an hour (day ticket €56.13). Zone A2: Monday to Saturday from 9:00 to 23:00, at €6.94 an hour. Zone BC: €5.34 an hour, with hours that vary by area. Public holidays are no longer free: the normal zone rate applies.

P+R

P+R Berlijnplein, Papendorp, Utrecht Science Park and Westraven sell the P+R-combikaart: all-day parking plus a public transport return trip for up to 5 people. At Utrecht Science Park it costs €8.50 (€5.50 for transport and €3.00 for parking); without public transport you pay €2.50 an hour, up to €15.00 a day.

Market days

The main city centre market is on the Vredenburg: Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 to 17:00 and Saturday from 8:00 to 17:00. From March to December it also opens on the first Sunday of each month from 11:00 to 17:00, as well as on the last Sunday before 5 December and the last before 25 December. On Friday, from 9:00 to 17:00, the Vredenburg also hosts a Boerenmarkt.

On Saturday there are flower markets on the Janskerkhof and the Oudegracht, from 8:00 to 17:00, and a fabric market on the Breedstraat, from 8:00 to 13:00. In the districts, the Leidsche Rijn market on the Brusselplein is held on Thursday from 9:00 to 18:00, and the Overvecht market on the Zamenhofdreef on Thursday from 9:00 to 13:00.
