Madrid: good to know before you park
Madrid ZBE
Since 1 January 2025 the whole municipality has been a Low Emission Zone: vehicles without a DGT environmental label (category A) may not drive on its streets. A transitional scheme in force since 7 April 2026, and subject to air quality, only lets category A vehicles registered in Madrid and category A vehicles that are not cars (vans, motorbikes, lorries) drive, and never inside the ZBEDEP Distrito Centro and Plaza Elíptica zones. The fine is €200 (€100 if paid early).
Cars with an ECO or Cero emisiones label may enter the ZBEDEP Distrito Centro freely. With a B or C label you cannot drive through the district: you may only enter to park in a public or private car park that belongs to the permit system, which registers your access without any paperwork on your side.
SER: parking on the street
The Servicio de Estacionamiento Regulado applies on working weekdays from 9:00 to 21:00 and on Saturdays from 9:00 to 15:00; in August, and on 24 and 31 December, from 9:00 to 15:00. There is no service on Sundays and public holidays. Without a resident permit, the limit is 2 hours in a green bay and 4 hours in a blue bay, after which you must wait one hour before parking again. Pay at the meter by entering your number plate, or with the authorised apps (EasyPark, Telpark, ElParking, Parclick, among others); in the apps, the “Desaparcar” option charges only the time actually used.
EMT park and ride
EMT offers more than 5,773 park and ride spaces in seven car parks, such as Estadio Metropolitano, Avenida de Portugal and Nuestra Señora del Recuerdo. Parking there is free if the car stays between 5 and 16 hours and you use public transport on the same day: when leaving, show your entry ticket and your transport ticket at the car park office. Outside those limits the standard hourly rate applies.
Market days
El Rastro sets up its stalls every Sunday and public holiday from 9:00 to 15:00 on plaza de Cascorro, Ribera de Curtidores and the surrounding streets, between La Latina and Embajadores. From Monday to Saturday only the shops and galleries of the area are open, with no street stalls.
On those days the city closes the market streets to traffic, including Embajadores, Toledo, Ribera de Curtidores and plaza General Vara del Rey, from 8:00 to 15:00, and reopens them gradually while stalls are packed up and the area is cleaned, until 18:00. Parking motorbikes, cars, scooters and bicycles inside that area is banned from 0:00 to 18:00, so do not leave your car there the night before.
Inside the area, only residents, taxis, ride-hailing cars (VTC) and public transport may enter certain zones. For all other drivers, the car park on calle Capitán Salazar Martínez is opened on Sundays and public holidays, entered via calle Toledo from the Puerta de Toledo roundabout. By public transport: metro Tirso de Molina (line 1), Embajadores (line 3) and La Latina (line 5), or Cercanías Embajadores (C5).
