Glasgow: good to know before you park
Low Emission Zone (LEZ)
Glasgow's LEZ has applied to all vehicles since 1 June 2023 and operates 24 hours a day, all year round. It covers the city centre between the M8 motorway (north and west), the River Clyde (south) and Saltmarket/High Street (east); the M8 itself is outside the zone. Petrol cars and vans must meet Euro 4 and diesel ones Euro 6; fully electric vehicles comply, and motorcycles and mopeds are not affected. You cannot pay to enter: cameras read number plates and a non-compliant vehicle receives a £60 penalty charge, halved if paid within 14 days, which doubles with each further breach in the same zone up to £480 for a car and resets after 90 days without a breach. Vehicles registered outside the UK cannot use the Scottish online checker: owners must confirm the Euro standard with the manufacturer or their national vehicle authority.
Council car parks
Glasgow City Council runs 16 car parks: 6 multi-storey or barrier-controlled sites and 10 surface pay and display car parks. The multi-storeys accept cash, cards and contactless. Most charge by the hour between 8:00 and 18:00, with an overnight flat rate of £5.00 from 18:00 to 8:00; Duke Street and Cambridge Street currently offer all-day parking for £6.00 and £8.00, paid at the machine before you leave. The SEC Car Park, opposite the Scottish Event Campus, has 1600 spaces and a 2 m height limit; on event days a 12-hour pre-pay ticket costs £12.00.
Park and Ride
SPT runs Park and Ride at three Subway stations: Bridge Street (183 spaces), Shields Road (839) and Kelvinbridge (158). The car parks open during Subway hours, and only Shields Road allows overnight parking. Take a ticket at the barrier and pay at the station ticket office: £8.15 covers all-day parking plus a return Subway journey. Drivers who only park pay by card at the exit: £3.20 for up to 2 hours or £8.15 for the day. The other Park and Ride sites in the region are at ScotRail stations.
