Liverpool: good to know before you park
City centre: no free parking from 7:00 to 23:00
Liverpool city centre is a Controlled Parking Zone: you may only park in designated bays, yellow lines apply everywhere else, and there is no free parking between 7:00 and 23:00. In the inner zone, charges apply every day during those hours: £2.30 for 30 minutes, £4.40 for 1 hour and £6.50 for 2 hours. The longest stay costs £10.60, for up to 4 hours before 18:00 or up to 5 hours between 18:00 and 23:00. Outside the charging hours, these bays are free and unrestricted.
Outer zone and council car parks
The outer zone, in wider Liverpool, keeps the same hours at lower prices: £1.80 for 30 minutes, £3.40 for 1 hour and £5.40 for 2 hours, or £8.50 in long stay bays. Blue Badge holders park free all day in pay and display bays. Council surface car parks such as Burgess Street, Dale Street and Fontenoy Street open from 7:30 to 19:30; at Dale Street, 1 hour costs £3.40 and more than 5 hours £11.60.
Pay by app, and beware of QR codes
You can pay by phone in every on-street bay and in most council car parks through the National Parking Platform, with apps such as AppyParking, APCOA Connect, JustPark, PayByPhone or RingGo. There is no ticket to display: wardens see your payment on their handheld devices, so enter the correct registration. The council stresses that none of its providers uses QR codes, so a code stuck on a machine is fake.
Mersey Tunnels toll
The Queensway (Birkenhead) and Kingsway (Wallasey) tunnels under the Mersey are tolled and open 24 hours a day; on Christmas Day only Kingsway is open. Since 1 April 2026, Class 1, which covers cars and vans up to 3.5 tonnes, pays £2.40. The booths give no change: use the AUTO lanes with the exact amount or a contactless card. With a T-FLOW prepaid account, cameras read your plate on approach, and Liverpool City Region residents pay £1.60 for personal trips.
Free parking at Merseyrail stations
Merseyrail offers free parking at more than 40 stations; only Hooton, Chester and Southport are pay and display. Overnight parking is banned: a car left more than 15 minutes after the last train, or more than 15 minutes before the first one, may receive a £30 penalty.
Match days around the stadiums
Streets around the Liverpool and Everton football grounds form Football Match Residents Parking Zones, reserved for permit holders; entry signs give the hours, from 10:00 to midnight between 1 August and 30 June. The council runs no paid parking there: people in yellow jackets asking £5 to park on the street are not council staff.
