Bologna: good to know before you park
ZTL: every day from 7:00 to 20:00
Much of Bologna's historic centre is an environmental ZTL watched by Sirio cameras every day from 7:00 to 20:00. Some areas stay closed day and night even to permit holders: pedestrian streets, zone T (via Rizzoli and via Ugo Bassi), the Università zone, San Francesco Pratello, Azzo Gardino and Moline Capo di Lucca. Works on the Rossa and Verde tram lines often change traffic layouts: follow the signs on site.
The entry ticket
Without a permit you can buy a digital ticket online: €6 for one day or €15 for four consecutive days. Buy and activate it before passing the gate, as buying it afterwards does not make the entry valid; after 20:00 it can only be activated for the next day. It is linked to your number plate, so there is nothing to display, but it does not include parking. The same plate is allowed at most 3 daily tickets or 1 four day ticket per month. No Italian tax code? The website lets you generate one by entering the foreign country as place of birth and EE as province.
Staying in the centre
Hotels and B&Bs inside the ZTL send your plate to the city, which adds it to the authorised list: give them your car details before you arrive or when you check in. At the hotel you can get a €9 daily pass, which includes a Tper daily pass and is valid for 24 hours in every blue bay in the city; put it on the windscreen with the plate, stamp, date and time.
Blue bays: four price bands
Since 1 May 2025 street parking costs €3.90 an hour in the Cerchia del Mille and €2.90 in the rest of the historic centre, on working days including Saturday, from 8:00 to 20:00. In the semicentral ring it costs €2.20 an hour and in the outer ring €1.80, from 8:00 to 18:00, with a daily rate of €11 and €9. In R/R quick turnover areas payment starts at 9:00 and season passes do not apply. At the meter you key in the full plate, with no ticket to leave in the car, and you can extend your stay from any of the more than 560 meters or with the apps.
Park and ride and car parks
In the P+BUS areas at Prati di Caprara, Antistadio and Ferriera, marked with blue lines, you print the dedicated ticket at the meter and parking is free for the whole day. The Ex Staveco car park has 280 spaces, is open 24 hours a day and is served by buses 32 and 33: €2 an hour by day, €1 an hour at night, €12 a day, with UnipolMove electronic toll payment and a maximum height of 2 metres.
Car free weekends and the 30 limit
During T Days, from 8:00 on Saturday to 22:00 on Sunday and on public holidays from 8:00 to 22:00, via Rizzoli and via Ugo Bassi are open only to pedestrians and bikes, along with other streets such as part of via Indipendenza. A 30 km/h limit applies on 258 km of city streets: watch the signs.
