Firenze: good to know before you park

ZTL: when the cameras are on

In Firenze the whole historic centre is a Zona a Traffico Limitato, split into sectors A, B, O, F and G. In sectors A, B and O the camera gates are active Monday to Friday from 7:30 to 20:00 and on Saturday from 7:30 to 16:00. From the first Thursday of April to the first Sunday of October a summer night ZTL is added, covering every sector on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights until 3:00, with times set each year by a city ordinance.

Getting in without a fine

Without a permit you can buy a daily pass online, either transit only or transit plus parking in residents' bays; print it and display it in the car. Each vehicle can get at most 10 a month and 60 a year. The simpler option is a Firenze Parcheggi garage: all 14 of its car parks, have entrances and exits outside the ZTL gates.

Blue lines and yellow lines

Outside the ZTL the city is divided into five controlled parking zones (ZCS). Mind the colours: here yellow bays are for residents, white bays are free and blue bays are paid on working days from 8:00 to 20:00. The sign tells you the bay type: three panels mean rotation parking, two panels mean shared parking. In ZCS 1, closest to the centre, rotation costs €2 for the first hour and €3 from the second, and shared bays €2 an hour; in ZCS 2 to 5 rotation costs €1 for the first hour and €2 from the second, and shared bays €1 an hour.

How to pay

Parking meters take coins and Visa, Mastercard and Maestro cards; on the digital ones you type in your number plate and then leave the ticket on the dashboard. By phone you can pay with BMove, DropTicket, EasyPark, MooneyGo, TabNet, Tap&Park and Telepass. According to Servizi alla Strada, which runs parking for the city, Tap&Park charges no commission and the others may add fees.

Park and ride the tram

Coming in on the A1 motorway, you can stop at Villa Costanza, between the Firenze Scandicci and Firenze Impruneta exits. The car park can only be reached from the motorway, it is open 24 hours a day and your car can stay up to 30 consecutive days. From the terminus, tram T1 reaches Santa Maria Novella station in 22 minutes. The first 15 minutes are free, then it costs €0.50 up to 1 hour, €2 up to 4 hours, €5 up to 10 hours and €7 up to 24 hours. Inside the city, the Guidoni park and ride on tram line T2, in viale XI Agosto, is open 24 hours a day: €1.50 for the first 5 hours, a further €2.50 up to 12 hours, then €4 an hour.

Careggi hospital

Around Careggi, on some streets in ZCS 5 such as viale Pieraccini, largo Brambilla and piazza di Careggi, shared bays have a reduced rate of €0.50 an hour. On viale Pieraccini, Firenze Parcheggi also runs the Careggi CTO and Pieraccini Meyer car parks, and the T1 links Villa Costanza with the hospital in about 40 minutes.
