Park, drive and get around
without surprises, wherever you go.
Practical guides to traffic rules, tolls and vignettes, low emission zones and parking in Europe and New York. Find the relevant sources, local conditions and dates before you travel.
What are you planning?
Start with your trip, then check the local rules in the relevant guide.
Drive into a city
Check access restrictions before choosing a car park. Paying for parking does not itself give permission to enter a restricted zone.

Drop someone off or leave a car at the airport
A terminal drop-off lane, a short-stay car park and long-stay parking serve different needs. Check the terminal, walking or shuttle time and the payment deadline.
Vehicle, equipment and documents
Check inspections, winter equipment, charging and the documents needed for the trip.

Driver tools and calculators
Compare tyres and wheels, estimate registration years, calculate vehicle costs and convert fuel consumption. Choose a tool, check its assumptions and try the worked example.
Calculate your trip budget
Planning the drive? Include fuel, tolls and parking in one budget.
Build a parking plan that works for the whole trip
Start with the exact destination and your vehicle. A garage booking does not grant access to a restricted street, and an emissions sticker accepted in one country may not answer the rules in another. Read the access guide before choosing the parking entrance.
Compare the complete stay: parking, transport for everyone, tolls and the return journey. For an airport, use the time you will reach the car park and collect the vehicle, not just flight times. For an evening in town, check whether the return service fits the parking conditions.
Before you set off
- Check the vehicle actually being used: registration, fuel type, height including roof equipment, and whether a trailer changes the parking conditions. Keep the entrance address separate from the destination address.
- Keep the booking or payment confirmation and the operatorโs contact details available offline. Check pedestrian access after closing time and decide where to go if the intended car park is full.

At Schiphol, choose between a brief drop-off, parking to meet someone and parking during a flight. Then compare the complete booking price, terminal transfer, vehicle clearance and key handover. A product name alone does not establish walking distance or included services.

International Driving Permit: when you need one and how to apply
This application route is for holders of a Spanish driving licence. Check the destination's requirements and your rental contract before requesting an international permit. The permit accompanies the original licence; it neither replaces it nor extends an expired licence.

Check the inspection deadline for the vehicle's category and registration history before booking an Italian revisione. A service appointment is not an inspection, and a booking does not automatically authorise driving with an expired test. Keep the result and payment evidence together.

Check the country and local signs before parking on a UK pavement. London and Scotland have general bans with specific exceptions; rules elsewhere differ. A narrow road or lack of yellow lines does not make it acceptable to block pedestrians or wheelchair users.

Parking in Italy: blue, white and yellow lines explained
In Italy, read bay colour together with the sign: paid, free and reserved spaces can all have conditions. Check hours, eligible vehicles and any parking-disc requirement before leaving the car. Paying for a space does not authorise entry through a ZTL gate.

Use the app and location code displayed at the actual UK parking space, then confirm the number plate and successful session. GPS and a saved vehicle can select the wrong details. If payment fails, use the alternative shown on the sign rather than assuming parking is free.

E-scooters in Spain: DGT registration, insurance and fines
Before using an e-scooter in Spain, check its certification, registration and insurance as separate requirements. Then check the riding rules, protective equipment and municipal route restrictions. A used scooter needs checks on the actual vehicle, not just the model name in an advert.

Before public charging in the Netherlands, check the connector, accepted payment method and full tariff. Charging fees and parking fees are separate. Visitors need a usable charging session; residents requesting a new public point must follow their municipality's application rules.

Christmas markets: where to park (and when to leave the car at home)
Choose the Christmas market and travel date first, then check its current opening dates, driving restrictions and last return service. The markets in Madrid, Barcelona, Edinburgh, Birmingham and Manchester have different access rules; a nearby garage does not establish permission to enter.

Check the roads you will actually drive, including mountain diversions. Italy uses road-specific winter equipment orders; Spain uses signs and weather restrictions. Tyre markings, chain compatibility and the conditions for the return journey matter more than the season alone.

- Official sources. Our references are legal texts, public authorities and operators. Sources are linked at the end of each guide so you can check the applicable conditions.
- Visible dates. Each guide shows when it was published, when it was updated and when it was last checked.
- Nothing made up. If no reliable source publishes a figure, we leave it out: we would rather say we do not know.
- Corrections. If you spot a mistake, tell us: we check it and correct the guide.
